What happens?

Thieves are increasingly exploiting the weak point in locks fitted to uPVC and composite doors, a vulnerability that also extends to most new apartment flats and some wooden doors. Shockingly, 95% of burglaries that Danum Locksmiths attend in the Doncaster area are instances where these locks have been snapped, underscoring the urgent need for enhanced security measures.

The lock is called a “euro cylinder” and is made mainly of brass. Brass is a soft metal that does not rust, which is ideal for the properties required to produce a lock that will last for an extended period with no maintenance.

With just a few basic tools and a bit of knowledge, the seemingly secure euro cylinder lock can be easily “snapped” in half! Once the outer half is removed, the intruder gains direct access to the locking mechanism, rendering the multi-point lock useless and the door easily unlocked. This simple yet effective method is a stark reminder of the vulnerability of traditional locks.

Is lock bumping and lock snapping the same?

These two terms are totally different and though lock bumping is on the increase, it is not as great a threat as snapping… yet!

Lock bumping is a lock picking technique for opening a euro or rim cylinder lock using a specially crafted bump key. A bump key must correspond to the target lock in order to work correctly.

The lock bumping technique can make it easy and fast to break into homes without needing special equipment or leaving any sign of forced entry. It works almost as well as actually having a key. A set of 10 lock bumping keys can open 75% of common euro locks and almost all euro locks are vulnerable to lock bumping.
